Yet again, it’s been a while since I’ve posted on here. I’m in Orlando, Florida this week, attending the Live! 360 Conference.  More specifically, I’m here with tons of IT Pros attending the TechMentor conference.  Today is an 8 hour workshop, “PowerShell Scripting and Toolmaking.”  It’s been great so far. I’m so, so glad I’m moving into the IT Field.

I’ve got 4 classes left for my Bachelor’s Degree in IT Security: Linux+ Part 2, which will get me a CompTIA Linux+ cert, an LPIC-1 cert, and a SUSE SysAdmin Cert, CCNA Security, Technical Writing, and my Capstone. Graduation is February!  Not much further to go at all.

Anyways, I’m going to try and get back to this a little more often. We’ll see how it goes. Work has been busy, school has been busy, and oh yeah, adopting a 16 year old girl has also been crazy!  But she’s wonderful from what we know so far. I haven’t even met her face to face, but I already love her like she was my daughter.

Marsland Consulting & Design, LLC, seems off to a good start.  We’ve changed directions ever so slightly to include marketing and branding now, which I think will be great for us.  An awesome and close friend of mine in the marketing business has signed on as a partner and co-founder and I’m really looking forward to working with her.

Back to the grind at work with the Navy, where I’ll be assuming the role of primary Information Systems Security Officer and Information Technology Division Officer for my command.  That experience should prove useful, as all experience does.

Next post, I hope to unveil more on the branding and logo decision we’ve made for the company.

In more personal news, the family is doing well. I’m on injection #2 of EuFlexxa for my knee. So far so painful, but we’ll see how it goes. I remain optimistic.

Until Next Time!

It’s been 4 1/2 months since my last post.  Crazy how time flies when  you’re… having fun?  Haha!

I’ve been doing quite a bit.  My first semester at Western Governors University is over, and with my current plan I’ll have my B.S. in IT Security in 11 more months.  Not too shabby.

Today’s topic is on leadership and building a business.  I’ve never been the best salesperson, but today I learned quite a bit about word of mouth and the importance of networking.  I run Marsland Consulting & Design, LLC, an IT consulting and Web Design company that I plan on really building when I retire from the military.

I have some extra things I’d like to get soon for the business so I announced my search for a new client or two.  After two reviews of my company posted (one by a previous client, one by a friend of mine), another friend of a friend pretty much signed a design deal with me.  Extremely happy about that prospect and looking forward to closing a deal tomorrow.

In the small business community, what do you do to garner more business?

Alright, a little about me.  As of the time of this writing, I’m 30 years old.  I’ve got years upon years of college under my belt, but no degree yet.  I’m working on fixing that now.  Professionally, I’m a United States Navy Chief Petty Officer, and have been a sailor in the Navy now for 13 years.  I teach at the Nuclear Power School in Goose Creek, South Carolina.

I’m lucky enough to be married to the best woman in the world, Jennifer, who serves as the command’s ombudsman.  She also has a Bachelor’s Degree from Washington State University, is a licensed Massage Therapist, owner of Rainier Holistic, LLC, and is a Birth Arts International and DONA-trained doula, helping woman around the lowcountry.

We have three children, who keep us very busy. They’re 4, 2, and 8 months now, and changing by the minute, it seems.

Outside of the Navy, I am a review writer, as of last week, for Some Kind of Star Trek, a blogger for the LifeHacker sub-blog, Hackerspace (you can see my specific posts here), and a full-time student in a Bachelor’s of Science – Information Technology Security program at Western Governor’s University.  I just started there in June, and plan on blogging for Hackerspace about my progress there, while reviewing Star Trek books, movies, and TV episodes for SKOST.  I also plan on using this as a platform for my personal beliefs, views, etc.  I have this crazy idea of running for public office one day, and the views I express here may come into play in some fashion there at some point after I retire from the military.

With that said, enjoy!
